Let’s all look at the car sales in this different country, where no cars are produced. Number of cars sold in paranthesis.

20. Mercedes Benz B-Class (1883)

Kinja'd!!!

Because of the electric version being popular in urban areas, the B-class makes the top 20.

19. Volvo V60 (1895)

Kinja'd!!!

Not new anymore, and it is often considered too small for Norwegian families.

20. Ford Focus (2012)

Kinja'd!!!

17. Volkswagen up! (2039)

Kinja'd!!!

Most of them were electric.

16. Volvo XC60 (2231)

Kinja'd!!!

Starting to feel old, but we like our Volvos

15. BMW i3 (2403)

Kinja'd!!!

Electric.

14. Ford Mondeo (2549)

Kinja'd!!!

The Mondeo sold better in previous iterations, the new model doesn’t stand out too much.

13. Audi A3 (2776)

Kinja'd!!!

Most of them were the plug-in hybrid e-tron.

12. Nissan Qashqai (2808)

Kinja'd!!!

New design made a lot of people replace their old one.

11. Volvo V70 (2814)

Kinja'd!!!

“Hurry, before they stop producing it!”

10. Mazda CX-5 (3168)

Kinja'd!!!

We listen to Top Gear.

9. Nissan Leaf (3189)

Kinja'd!!!

Electric. Lots of used Leafs were also imported.

8. Volkswagen Passat (3207)

Kinja'd!!!

New model. Not all of them looked like this.

Toyota RAV-4 (3755)

Kinja'd!!!

Znork .

Mitsubishi Outlander (3955)

Kinja'd!!!

See above. Most were plug-in hybrids.

5. Tesla Model S (4039)

Kinja'd!!!

You knew it would come, right?

4. Toyota Yaris (4214)

Kinja'd!!!

Please, stop it..

3. Skoda Octavia (4280)

Kinja'd!!!

New, rather good looking and cheap. Totally understandable.

2. Toyota Auris (4890)

Kinja'd!!!

I SAID STOP!

1. Volkswagen Golf (16388)

Kinja'd!!!

No, not a typo. The sales got boosted by the e-Golf and the GTE plug-in hybrid. This is the best selling model per year of all time in Norway, beating the Ford Sierra figures from 1986.

How will 2016 go? I expect the list to be pretty much the same, but the Tesla Model X and the Volvo XC90 might change things slightly.

So many Teslas, thats the thing I’m most surprised by on this list.

Subsidies for buying electric cars are kind of mental in Norway.

Considering that it costs the same price as a well equiped Ford mondeo in Norway, it’s actually not that surprising :)

A top of the line gasoline Ford Mondeo will cost around 80000$ in base model in norway, while an electric vehicle gets insane rebates. A TEsla model S costs about 100.000$ in Norway...

Elaborate incentives which Norway can afford because it makes so much money from fossil fuels...

For comparison, there were only a few hundred Teslas sold in Sweden.

There must be. That’s almost a tenth of Tesla’s global sales just to Norway. Tesla must love it up there.

Looking at it like that I would take the Tesla too.

My native the Netherlands, another relatively tiny country, imports roughly 2000 new Teslas a year as well. When ignoring Ford of Europe vehicles and Opel, Tesla is the best selling American brand here. Tesla outsells brands like Honda, Jeep and Subaru here.

Even a few hundred seems like a decent market share in such a small market.

It just seems strange when there are quite a few states that you can’t buy a Tesla in but they are taking hold in the Euro marketplace well, good for them

Maybe all the electric cars are due to the very high gas prices, which i believe are the equivalent of around $9 per gallon.

Depends on how you look at it. Tesla sold about 1,000 cars in a total market of 345,000 which while up considerably on 2014 is nothing like the sales they have in Norway.

You can see the figures here by clicking on “hamta” and downloading. It’s in Swedish (obviously!) but is reasonably intelligible once you find “personbilar” on p 6 and “miljopersonbilar” on p 17. Tesla don’t figure in the top 75 (p 6) but have about 1.65% of the environmentally friendly subdivision (p 17).

A mere $9 a gallon alone wouldn’t be nearly enough a motivation. There tend to be very sizeable subsidies/taxcuts for electric cars and plugins.

I’m not sure about Norway, but here in the Netherlands gasoline prices have dropped significantly. They’re at the equivalent of roughly $5.75 a gallon (US gallon) here now. Germany next door is cheaper.

Interesting to see so much variety from a country that doesn’t have a major car company. When travelling in Europe, I realized that the French buy french cars, the Germans bought german cars, and Italians buy italian cars. Didn’t see a Fiat or Lancia outside of Italy.

Nope, it’s due to elaborate (and controversial) incentives including less tax, free parking and use of bus lanes.

Fuel is just as dear elsewhere in Europe but people don’t buy many electric vehicles.

The V60 is too small for Norwegian families?

What are you, Yanks?

No wonder you won’t join the EU; Texas 2.0 isn’t eligible!

Used to make.. With the current low oil price, almost no Norwegian oil fields are profitable.

But that can change, of course.

Never mind. Norway has so much money stashed away that you won’t be calling in the IMF any time soon. Anyway, you still have fish!

I was working with Norwegians in Sweden a year ago. Just about every Tesla Model S we would see there would have Norwegian plates. I asked them why they seem to be so popular...

Turns out the Norwegian government would basically give you up to $90.000 in subsidies on single electric vehicle purchase (at that time).

I don’t know what the actual incentive/subsidy for a Tesla is right now, but it is enough to make the car pretty attractive there. In some cases a lot cheaper than luxury sedans powered by fossil fuels.

Even with the prices in Norway being seriously high compared to other countries in general, those are some serious discounts basically..
